Moai at Midnight - Rapa Nui National Park, Easter Island, Chile
This photograph of the 500-year-old stone Moai statues captures one of the most spiritual moments of my life. It was taken in the middle of a pitch-black starlit night and required a 20-minute exposure which reflects the earth’s rotation in the appearance of stars. The Moai statues, which are symbols of power and meant to ward off enemies, average 13 feet in height and were created to pay tribute to the islanders’ Polynesian ancestors. Of the 900 initially sculpted, 400 remain on what is one of the most remote inhabited places on earth.
